Russia: record high apple imports in July-November 2012

According to Fruit-Inform, Russia's apple imports in July-November 2012 were record high with import volumes amounting to 400,000 tonnes, while in the same period of the previous year imports had reached just 382,000 tonnes. Only in November 2012, the country imported 127,000 tonnes of apples that was the highest volume for November over the past 5 years.

“It was Russia's accession to the WTO that favored an increase in apple imports in the country”, said Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “Thanks to lower import duties, Russian companies had more opportunities to import high-quality produce at affordable prices”.

The expert also noted that Poland had managed to strengthen its leading position in apple exports to Russia pushing Moldova and China aside already in the first half of the season. In July-November 2012, Polish exporters shipped 128,000 tonnes of apples to the Russian Federation, while Poland's exports in the same period of the previous season amounted just to 48,000 tonnes.

According to Ms. Getman, Poland became the leader in apple exports to Russia also thanks to higher internal production that had reached 2,9 mln tonnes in the season 2012/13.
