Russia: prices of greenhouse tomatoes up by a third week-on-week

According to Fruit-Inform, prices of greenhouse tomatoes have grown by a third week-on-week in Russia.

For the present, Russian greenhouse farms offer tomatoes at RUB 30-40/kg (USD 0.75-1.00/kg), depending on quality and shipment volume, while a week before prices were not higher than RUB 30/kg (USD 0.75/kg).

A sharp increase in prices is connected with lower supply of greenhouse tomatoes due to cloudy weather and a decrease in temperature at night. The price growth is also backed by a fall in imports and rather high demand for greenhouse tomatoes in Russia.

It should also be noted that current prices are almost the same compared with the price levels registered in the end of summer 2013. The market participants connect no year-on-year changes in prices with a traditional increase in the demand for greenhouse tomatoes and a decrease in farms' outputs in late August – early September.

More detailed information about the Russian fruit and vegetable market, production and import trends will be presented at the 7th International Conference «Fruit & Vegetable Business of Russia-2014», which is to be held on September 16, in conjunction with the largest food exhibition in Russia WorldFood Moscow 2014.
