Ukrainian fresh produce price index down

Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index went down by 5% in the first week of this autumn (August 30 – September 05), after a sharp increase of 10% a week before. Thus, the price performance in the Ukrainian market has been mixed for the fourth week in a row fully reflecting uncertain situation in the country's political and economic life.

«Despite an increase in prices of potatoes, which still are the main product in Ukrainians' fruit and vegetable basket, a sharp fall in prices of seasonal and greenhouse vegetables and lower fruit prices resulted in a decrease in the fresh produce price index», says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «As regards traditional vegetables, the situation in that segment was mixed: an increase in white cabbage prices was compensated by lower prices of onions».

It should also be noted that Ukrainian farmers go on harvesting vegetables for long-term storage. If weather conditions remain favorable, growers plan to finish the potato and onion harvesting campaign by late September and switch over to harvesting late carrots and table beets. Harvesting of late white cabbage varieties is to be started in November.

We would remind you that more detailed information about current developments in the Russian and Ukrainian fruit and vegetable market is available for the subscribers of Fruit-Inform service packages.
