Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine assesses Ukrainian growers' losses from Russia's ban

Ukrainian growers' losses from Russia's ban on imports and transit of Ukrainian crops may reach $17 mln by the end of 2014, Mr. Igor Shvayka, Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine said on October 22, Kiev.

Fruits and vegetables are the main categories to suffer from the ban, according to him.

«Cucumbers and tomatoes were the key crops exported to Russia», he said. «Greenhouse vegetables, onions, carrots and table beets, and fruits (apples, quinces, apricots, plums, pears) accounted for 90% of Ukraine's exports to Russia».

According to Mr. Shvayka, Ukraine has shipped 81,000 tons of fruit and vegetable products to Russia in the first nine months of 2014. The export volumes in the same period of the previous year totaled 133,200 tons valued at $45.8 mln.

«As a result, if the ban is active until the end of 2014, growers' losses from impossibility to ship contracted products may total $17 mln. Possible losses in 2015 may reach $50-60 mln, according to our estimates», he added.

More detailed information about the impact of Russia's ban on the Ukrainian fruit and vegetable market will be presented at the 11th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014», which is going to be held on December 8-9 in Kiev. The conference will be followed by the 4th International Trade Forum with about 30 Ukrainian retail chains and importers ready to conduct negotiations with fruit and vegetable suppliers on December 10.
