Ukraine: sales of potatoes for export up

According to Fruit-Inform, the demand for Ukrainian potatoes has been growing in Azerbaijan and Georgia. High interest is also shown by middlemen from Crimea and Belarus.

Under conditions of high demand, growers from the western regions of Ukraine have already started raising prices. However, an increase in prices is insignificant now and is registered mainly in the segment of export-quality potatoes.

For the present, export prices vary between UAH 1.70-1.90/kg (EUR 0.10-0.11/kg) in the western regions of Ukraine, an increase of 15-20% week-on-week.

We would remind you that the situation was almost similar in the season 2011/12, when Ukrainian potato production was one of the largest, and prices in the internal market enabled to start exporting rather early. It was autumn 2011, when Ukrainian exporters said of large shipments to Azerbaijan and Georgia. Those countries purchased 4,500 tons of Ukrainian potatoes in the season 2011/12 with Ukraine's total potato exports standing at 6,500 tons. Russia was the third largest importer of Ukrainian potatoes in that season.

More detailed information about the Ukrainian market for potatoes, other fruits and vegetables will be presented at the 11th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014», which is going to be held on December 8-9 in Kiev. The conference will be followed by the 4th International Trade Forum with about 30 Ukrainian retail chains and importers ready to conduct negotiations with fruit and vegetable suppliers on December 10.
