Ukraine: cucumber prices twice as high as last year despite Russia's ban on imports

Cucumber prices are now almost twice as high in Ukraine as in the same period of the previous year, and sellers keep on raising them.

According to Fruit-Inform daily price monitoring, the sharpest increase in prices is registered at Shuvar Wholesale Market, Lviv. Cucumber prices went up by 70-80% week-on-week there and now vary between UAH 27-30/kg (USD 1.68-1.86/kg), an increase of 50% compared with the same period of the previous season.

Sellers at Dubovo Wholesale Market, Khmelnytskyi, offer cucumbers at UAH 28-30/kg (USD 1.74-1.86/kg), an increase of 40% week-on-week and 80% higher year-on-year.

As regards Ozerka Wholesale Market, Dnipropetrovsk, cucumber prices grew by a third compared with the previous week there and reached UAH 30-32/kg (USD 1.86-1.99/kg), twice as high as registered a year before.

Meanwhile, cucumber prices at Stolychnyi Wholesale Market, Kiev, are stable and vary between UAH 29-31/kg (USD 1.80-1.93/kg), an increase of 70% year-on-year.

As we have already informed, current cucumber prices in Ukraine are the highest over the past ten years. The price growth is observed as the end of the domestic season is now registered against a background of lack of imports due to instability in the currency market in the country.

More detailed information about the Ukrainian fruit and vegetable market developments will be presented at the 11th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014», which is going to be held on December 8-9 in Kiev. The conference will be followed by the 4th International Trade Forum with about 30 Ukrainian retail chains and importers ready to conduct negotiations with fruit and vegetable suppliers on December 10.
