Ukraine: banana consumption down

According to Fruit-Inform, consumption of bananas has been going down in Ukraine.

Ukraine imported just 18,000 tons of bananas in October 2014, a decrease of 18% compared with the same month of the previous year, when the import volumes had stood at 22,000 tons.

As before, Ecuador accounted for the largest share in Ukraine's banana imports: 85%. Costa Rica was the second largest supplier with the share of 11%.

Ukraine's cumulative imports of bananas over the first two months of the season 2013/14 totaled 31,000 tons, a decrease of 23% compared with September-October 2013. A year-on-year decrease in imports was registered due to currently relatively high banana prices in Ukraine connected with the devaluation of the Ukrainian hryvnia. For the present, bananas are offered at UAH 17.00-17.50/kg (USD 1.13-1.16/kg), almost twice as high as in the same period of the previous season. Furthermore, Ukrainians' paying capacity remains relatively low.

Lower banana imports are also connected with large supply of inexpensive domestic apples in the Ukrainian market, which traditionally compete with bananas in Ukrainians' fruit consumption structure.

More detailed information about the Ukrainian market for imported fruits and vegetables will be presented at the 11th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014», which is going to be held on December 8-9 in Kiev. The conference will be followed by the 4th International Trade Forum with about 30 Ukrainian retail chains and importers ready to conduct negotiations with fruit and vegetable suppliers on December 10.
