Ukraine: banana prices twice as high as last year

Rapid devaluation of the Ukrainian hryvnia has resulted in a significant increase in prices of imported produce. According to Fruit-Inform price monitoring, banana prices are currently twice as high as registered in the same period of the previous season.

Bananas are now offered at Stolychnyi Wholesale Market, Kiev, at UAH 16.00-16.50/kg (EUR 0.85-0.88/kg), while a year before prices were not higher than UAH 10.40/kg (EUR 0.55/kg).

Sellers at Kopani Wholesale Market, Kherson Region, sell bananas at UAH 15-18/kg (EUR 0.80-0.96/kg). For comparison, in the same period of the previous season, banana prices did not exceed UAH 10/kg (EUR 0.53/kg).

A year-on-year increase in banana prices at Shuvar Wholesale Market, Lviv, stands at 50%, and now bananas are offered at UAH 17-19/kg (EUR 0.90-1.00/kg).

The highest prices are now registered at Dubovo Wholesale Market, Khmelnytskyi: UAH 18-22/kg (EUR 0.96-1.17/kg), almost twice as high as a year before.

It should be noted that banana prices are stable now in Ukraine in view of low demand for those fruits in the country, as Ukrainians prefer less expensive domestic products. Furthermore, banana consumption keeps on going down in Ukraine. Fruit-Inform analysts have already reported of a year-on-year decrease of 25% in banana imports in the first two months of the season 2014/15.

More detailed information about the Ukrainian market for imported fruits and vegetables will be presented at the 11th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014», which is going to be held on December 8-9 in Kiev. The conference will be followed by the 4th International Trade Forum with about 30 Ukrainian retail chains and importers ready to conduct negotiations with fruit and vegetable suppliers on December 10.
