Ukraine: white cabbage price growth rates slow down

Crimean middlemen's demand for Ukrainian white cabbage has somewhat decreased since the beginning of this week, according to Fruit-Inform, and this has already affected prices fixed by Ukrainian growers.

As we have previously informed, feverish demand for white cabbage in Russia has spread to Crimea. Russian companies made attempts to compensate sharp shortage of supply by purchasing produce from the Crimean peninsula. In their turn, Crimean middlemen began to more actively purchase white cabbage in Ukraine, which was followed by a sharp jump in its prices.

However, Russian companies' demand for white cabbage has significantly fallen by the middle of this week due to higher supply of high-quality produce of Polish origin shipped to Russia through Belarus. As a result, such a trend has had an immediate effect on white cabbage prices in Ukraine: the price growth rates have significantly gone down in the middle of this week against an increase of 25-30% in the beginning.

For the present, Ukrainian growers ship nonstandard produce at UAH 2.50-3.00/kg (EUR 0.13-0.16/kg). Prices of high-quality white cabbage vary between UAH 3.50-4.20/kg (EUR 0.18-0.22/kg). It should be noted that current prices are averagely twice as high as registered in the same period of the previous season. At the same time, as of today, the majority of Ukrainian farmers have already sold no more than 40-50% of their white cabbage stocks with some large farms' unsold stocks reaching even 70%.

More detailed information about the trends observed in the Eastern European market for potatoes and traditional vegetables (onions, white cabbage, carrots, table beets) will be presented at the 7th International Conference «Potatoes & Vegetables of Ukraine-2015» to be held on February 27, 2015, Kiev, Ukraine.
