Ukraine: onion prices up thanks to high demand in Belarus and Crimea

Belarusian importers and Crimean middlemen's high demand for Ukrainian onions has resulted in a rapid increase in their prices.

According to Fruit-Inform daily price monitoring, Ukrainian farmers have raised their onion prices by 11-15% since the beginning of this week. Now produce is shipped at UAH 2.00-2.50/kg (EUR 0.10-0.13/kg), while before the weekend prices were not higher than UAH 2.20/kg (EUR 0.12/kg).

The situation is connected with high demand for onions in the Russian Federation, which purchases Ukrainian produce through Crimea and Belarus. As we have previously informed, onion prices have already reached five year high there.

It should be noted that in the same period of the previous season onion prices were twice as high as current levels due to a significant fall in onion production in Ukraine. As a result, Ukraine's onion imports reached record high in the season 2013/14 and were 50 times as high as registered in the previous season. Furthermore, Ukraine was the second largest importer of Russian onions in the season 2013/14.

More detailed information about the Eastern European onion market outlook will be presented at the 7th International Conference «Potatoes & Vegetables of Ukraine-2015», which will be held on February 27, 2015, Kiev, Ukraine.
