Russia: white cabbage growers stop raising prices due to high imports

An increase in the supply of imported white cabbage has resulted in lower demand for domestic produce in Russia, according to Fruit-Inform.

Russian wholesalers started actively buying Polish white cabbage through Belarus last week. In addition, the supply of relatively inexpensive produce grown in the Republic of Dagestan significantly grew this week. Prices of Dagestanian produce vary between RUB 20-27/kg (EUR 0.26-0.35/kg), depending on quality. Prices of Polish white cabbage are higher thanks to better quality: RUB 30-35/kg (EUR 0.39-0.45/kg) in Moscow.

An increase in the supply of imported white cabbage has seriously affected prices fixed by Russian farms, which were growing last week due to feverish demand. However, the price growth stopped this week due to lower trading activity in the market. Nevertheless, it should be noted that current prices of white cabbage are record high in Russia and 2.5-3 times as high as registered in the same period of the previous season.

More detailed information about the trends observed in the Eastern European market for potatoes and traditional vegetables (onions, white cabbage, carrots, table beets) will be presented at the 7th International Conference «Potatoes & Vegetables of Ukraine-2015» to be held on February 27, 2015, Kiev, Ukraine.
