Ukraine: first volumes of imported strawberries offered at Kiev wholesale market

Sellers at Stolychnyi Wholesale Market, Kiev, Ukraine, have started offering first volumes of imported strawberries in this season, according to Fruit-Inform daily price monitoring.

Strawberries are shipped from Greece and offered at UAH 150-200/kg (EUR 6.04-8.05/kg) in Kiev. The market participants say of relatively low demand for imported strawberries due to their high prices, which make them unaffordable for the majority of Ukrainians.

It should also be noted that prices of first volumes of imported strawberries are averagely 35% higher compared with the same period of the previous season due to the devaluation of the national currency in Ukraine.

Fruit-Inform analysts expect the competition between domestic and imported produce to be significantly lower in the strawberry market this year, which will result in a further decrease in strawberry imports in Ukraine. As a result, domestic growers will be able to start their season from higher prices with first large volumes of local strawberries expected to arrive in the Ukrainian market in the mid-May.

More detailed information about the Ukrainian berry market developments and outlook will be presented at the 6th International Conference «Berries of Ukraine-2015: Frozen Produce & Fresh Market». The conference will be held on May 21-22, 2015, Kiev, Ukraine.
