Kazakhstani onion exports to Georgia reach record high in 2015/16

Kazakhstan has significantly reduced its onion exports in the season 2015/16, according to Fruit-Inform. Meanwhile, despite a fall in total exports, shipments of Kazakhstani onions to Georgia reached record high.

The total export volumes of Kazakhstani onions amounted to just 37,000 tons, a decrease of 38% compared with the season 2014/15, when they had totaled 59,000 tons, five-year high.

Turkmenistan was the leading importer of onions from Kazakhstan in the past season and accounted for more than a third of total exports (12,300 tons).

Russia ranked second with imports totaling 8,900 tons. It should also be noted that Russia has been previously been the largest buyer of Kazakhstani onions. However, thanks to high supply of domestic onions in the past season, Russia significantly reduced onion imports.

Georgia was the third largest importer of Kazakhstani onions in the season 2015/16 and purchased 7,700 tons, the highest result ever.

Fruit-Inform analysts believe that Kazakhstan can have rather interesting opportunities in the Russian onion market in this season, and Russian importers have already said of their interest in buying onions from Kazakhstan this year.

More detailed information about the Kazakhstani fruit and vegetable market development and prospects will be presented at the 1st International Conference “Fruit & Vegetable Business in Kazakhstan-2016”, October 20-21, 2016, Holiday Inn Almaty.
