Ukraine: apple imports up in 2016/17

Ukraine has significantly increased apple imports in the season 2016/17 (July-June): the import volumes went up by 70%, according to Fruit-Inform.

They totaled 41,000 tons against just 24,700 tons in the previous season.

The market experts connect such a sharp rise in apple imports with a decrease in Ukrainian domestic production of apples. We would remind you that Ukrainian apple production was one of the lowest in 2016; therefore, the market players tried to compensate shortage of supply by imports.

An increase in Polish exports should also be noted, as, under conditions of Russia’s ban on imports, Poland kept on expanding its presence in alternative export markets. In the season 2016/17, Poland managed to export 25,700 tons of apples to Ukraine, an increase of 22% year-on-year.
