Tomato paste production may dramatically decline in China

Tomato News informs with the reference to the management of TunHe company, Chinese province Inner Mongolia observes significant losses of tomatoes for processing. According to the source, the losses may reach 70% or 1 mln. tons. The main reason of the problems was the unfavorable weather conditions combined with the massive attacks of pests and diseases on the planted areas.

No serious problems were detected in the other provinces of China but for the North of Xinjiang province, where rains hamper the harvesting of tomatoes. The source also points out that some processors failed to install tomato paste production lines before the beginning of the harvesting period. This fact is also able to correct the plans of China regarding the production volumes of tomato paste this season.

As a result, according to the experts' estimations, instead of the expected processing volumes of 5-5.2 mln. tons, only 4.2-4.7 mln. tons of tomatoes may be processed. And, even less than 4.2 mln. tons of tomatoes may possibly be processed.

According to information provided by CIS produce business periodical "Agrooglyad: Fruits and Vegetables" weekly, China is the main makebate on the world market of tomato paste - the country supplies this product for the lowest prices. As a result, Russia and Ukraine have sharply increased the imports of tomato paste from China in the recent years. Consequently, the purchase prices for tomatoes were decreased for the local farmers.

You will find out the perspectives of tomato production, processing and trade in Ukraine and Russia during the CIS largest international conferences "Fruits&Vegetable Business of Russia 2007. Wealth of New Opportunities" and "Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2007. Meeting New Leader".
