Moldova: apple exporters face problems with export to Russia

According to Infotag Agency, Moldovan fruit growers and processors have joined winemakers in problems with export to the Russian Federation.

Farmers say of the demand for apples of Moldovan origin to have sharply fallen in the Russian market in March.

«Purchase prices of Moldovan fruits are significantly lower year-on-year. Russian companies are not interested in concluding contracts of supply of Moldovan apples due to the situation in the region and difficult relations between Russia and Moldova», said an apple grower from Moldova.

According to him, in June 2014 prices of Golden Delicious apples of Moldovan origin were 42% lower compared with the same month of the previous year.

«Those apples are now sold at 0.31-0.58 euro/kg», he noted with regret.

The Moldovan canning industry representatives draw attention to the fact that canning factories from Austria, Poland and Germany plan to start purchasing apples at 0.030-0.035 euro/kg in view of a decrease in prices of apple juice concentrate to record low levels of 500-550 euro/MT.

Russia is now carrying out its verbal threats, according to the Moldovan business participants. Growers and processors of fruits and vegetables were the first to face problems after winemakers. On July 7th, 2014, Russia's sanitation and epidemiological watchdog has issued an order to recall canned peas manufactured by Moldovan cannery Fortuna Plus.

It should be noted that Moldova is the second after Poland largest supplier of apples to Russia. In the period from July 2013 to May 2014, Moldova shipped 168,000 tons of apples to the Russian Federation, an increase of just 2 tons compared with the same period of the previous season. Thus, Moldova accounted for the share of 17% in Russia's total apple imports.
