Fruit and vegetable price decrease rates slow down in Ukraine

Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index went down by 1.7% in the week from August 2nd to 8th, after a fall of 9.6% a week before. Thus, the price decrease rates slowed down in Ukraine. Nevertheless, the Ukrainian fresh produce price index has been decreasing for the 6th week in a row with a cumulative fall standing at about 58% over the past 6 weeks.

«Worse quality of field-grown tomatoes due to too hot weather in the southern regions and a decrease in prices of traditional vegetables to critically low levels were the main reasons for slower price decrease rates in Ukraine last week», says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «A further decrease in prices was almost impossible, as potatoes were already 20% less expensive year-on-year, white cabbage prices went down by a third, carrot prices halved, and prices of onions and red beets more than halved compared with the same period of the previous season».

The fruit price index became 5.3% lower in Ukraine last week. An increase in prices of melons and watermelons was compensated by a fall in grape and banana prices.
