Ukrainian table grape season ends with record high prices

According to Fruit-Inform, the majority of Ukrainian table grape growers have finished their season last week.

In general, farmers are satisfied with the season's results. Competition with imported produce was significantly lower in the domestic market. The devaluation of the Ukrainian hryvnia had led to a considerable increase in prices of imported grapes that favored domestic growers' competitiveness.

Ukrainian table grapes were in stably high demand within the whole season despite at least 50% increase in their prices compared with the previous year.

The price growth was also backed by occupation of Crimea. Crimean growers faced serious problems with shipping produce to mainland Ukraine, therefore Ukrainian buyers actively purchased grapes from Odessa and Kherson Regions, which accounted for up to 60% of Ukraine's total table grape production.

Last Friday Ukrainian farmers offered remaining volumes of table grapes at UAH 10-20/kg (EUR 0.58-1.17/kg), depending on variety and quality, an increase of 70% year-on-year.

More detailed information about the Ukrainian market for table grapes and other fruit and vegetable products will be presented at the 11th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014», which is going to be held on December 8-9 in Kiev. The conference will be followed by the 4th International Trade Forum with about 30 Ukrainian retail chains and importers ready to conduct negotiations with fruit and vegetable suppliers on December 10.
