Onion prices up in southern regions of Ukraine

According to Fruit-Inform, onion prices have gone up by 25% in the southern regions of Ukraine over a week.

Farmers did not hurry with harvesting due to weak demand and low prices. In addition, they were short of facilities to store all grown onions. A cold spell in the previous weekend was an unpleasant surprise for farmers from some districts of Kherson and Mykolaiv Regions, who were selling their produce directly from fields. Farms stopped sales of onions suffered from frosts in the hope of improvement of quality after warm spell. As a result, farmers shipping onions from storage immediately took advantage of that and raised prices.

For the present, growers from Kherson and Mykolaiv Regions are ready to ship onions at UAH 1.30-1.80/kg (EUR 0.08-0.11/kg), depending on quality. For comparison, onions were sold at no higher than UAH 1.50/kg (EUR 0.09/kg) last week.

It should be noted that current onion prices are at least half as high as in the same period of the previous season. A year-on-year decrease in prices is connected with higher onion production in Ukraine. Prices are also under pressure of lack of exports. We would remind you that farmers from the southern regions had started actively shipping their produce to Russia in the mid-October, but the Russian Federation introduced the ban on imports of Ukrainian fruits and vegetables on October 22.

More detailed information about the Ukrainian fruit and vegetable market developments will be presented at the 11th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014», which is going to be held on December 8-9 in Kiev. The conference will be followed by the 4th International Trade Forum with about 30 Ukrainian retail chains and importers ready to conduct negotiations with fruit and vegetable suppliers on December 10.
