Sales of Ukrainian canned fruits, vegetables fall by at least a third since beginning of season

According to Fruit-Inform, sales of Ukrainian canned fruits and vegetables have significantly fallen in the country since the beginning of the current marketing year.

Representatives of canning factories say of a decrease of at least a third in their sales since September (the beginning of the season) compared with the same period of the previous year. A year-on-year fall in sales is registered due to both Ukrainians' lower purchasing power and a significant decrease in exports connected with the ban on imports of Ukrainian products in Russia. It should be noted that Russia accounted for about 80% of Ukraine's total exports of canned fruits and vegetables. However, after introduction of the ban on July 29, many Ukrainian canning factories faced problems with sales of their products.

According to the market participants, canned fruits and vegetables are now sold mainly to public sector organizations, while sales through retail chains and wholesale companies remain moderate.

More detailed information about the Ukrainian market for canned fruits and vegetables will be presented at the 11th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014», which is going to be held on December 8-9 in Kiev. The conference will be followed by the 4th International Trade Forum with about 30 Ukrainian retail chains and importers ready to conduct negotiations with fruit and vegetable suppliers on December 10.
