Ukraine: fifth week of fresh produce price growth in Ukraine

Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index went up by 7.1% in the week from November 22nd to 28th, after an increase of 7.2% a week before. As a result, the price index has already become almost 38% higher over the past 5 weeks.

«Prices of traditional vegetables grew last week after a long period of stagnation», says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «Traditionaly vegetables became 16.1% more expensive, but their prices are still extremely low for farmers, as they do not cover production costs, not to speak of storage and handling ones. As a result, the longer prices remain low, the smaller areas are expected to be sown in the following year».

The sharpest increase in prices among traditional vegetables was registered in the white cabbage segment: up by 5.9% due to cold weather, which had led to lower supply of low-quality produce previously exerting serious pressure on prices.

The segment of greenhouse vegetables was characterized by bidirectional price fluctuations: cucumber prices went down, but tomatoes became more expensive, except for imported produce.

Stable Ukrainian hryvnia exchange rates also favored stabilization in the fruit index, which went down by 3.4% due to a decrease in banana prices.
