Ukrainian cucumber market unprepared for sharp increase in imports

The Ukrainian cucumber market was unprepared for a sharp increase in imports, which negatively affected prices.

According to Fruit-Inform, imported cucumbers have become 13-14% less expensive in Ukraine over a week. For the present, they are offered at UAH 21-25/kg (USD 1.40-1.66/kg), depending on quality. For comparison, a week before suppliers were ready to ship imported cucumbers at no lower than UAH 24/kg (USD 1.60/kg).

A fall in prices is registered due to a significant increase in cucumber imports, while the demand for those vegetables remains rather weak. As a rule, wholesale companies and retailers prefer to purchase imported cucumbers only for their regular sales due to Ukrainians' currently low demand for those vegetables.

It should be noted that cucumber prices are now 50% higher compared with the same period of the previous season. A year-on-year increase in them is observed due to the devaluation of the Ukrainian hryvnia. More detailed information about the Ukrainian fruit and vegetable market developments and outlook will be presented at the 11th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014», which is going to be held on December 8-9 in Kiev. The conference will be followed by the 4th International Trade Forum with about 30 Ukrainian retail chains and importers ready to conduct negotiations with fruit and vegetable suppliers on December 10.
