Ukraine: wholesale prices of greenhouse tomatoes up by 50% week-on-week

Prices of domestic greenhouse tomatoes have grown by 50% in Ukraine over a week. According to Fruit-Inform daily price monitoring, the tomato price growth is now registered at almost all wholesale markets of the country.

The most rapid growth in prices was observed at Stolychnyi Wholesale Market, Kiev. For the present, sellers ship those vegetables at UAH 25-27/kg (EUR 1.28-1.38/kg), an increase of 70% week-on-week. It should also be noted that current prices are 2.3-2.5 times of those registered in the same period of the previous season.

Meanwhile, tomatoes have become 40% more expensive at Dubovo Wholesale Market, Khmelnytskyi, and now are offered at UAH 20-25/kg (EUR 1.02-1.28/kg), 3.2 times as high as a year before.

Prices at Shuvar Wholesale Market, Lviv, have not changed compared with the previous week and now vary between UAH 20-22/kg (EUR 1.02-1.12/kg), an increase of 50-60% year-on-year.

The price growth at the level of wholesale markets is observed due to an increase in prices fixed by greenhouse farms, which have raised them by 16-20% week-on-week in connection with closer end of the season. An increase in prices is also backed by relatively high price levels of imported produce due to the devaluation of the Ukrainian hryvnia. Furthermore, the supply of imported tomatoes is limited in Ukraine due to instability in the currency market.

It should also be noted that current prices fixed by Ukrainian greenhouse farms are 60-100% higher compared with the same period of the previous season. More detailed information about the Ukrainian fruit and vegetable market developments and outlook will be presented at the 11th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014», which is going to be held on December 8-9 in Kiev. The conference will be followed by the 4th International Trade Forum with about 30 Ukrainian retail chains and importers ready to conduct negotiations with fruit and vegetable suppliers on December 10.
