Ukraine halves pear imports since beginning of this season

Ukraine has almost halved imports of pears since the beginning of the season 2014/15.

Ukraine’s pear imports totaled just slightly more than 2,000 tons in July 2014 – March 2015 against reaching about 4,000 tons in the same period of the previous season.

The EU countries were the largest suppliers in the current season. The Netherlands were the leader with the share of 41% in Ukraine’s total imports. Poland and Italy accounted for 39% and 7%, respectively.

A fall in Ukraine’s pear imports in the season 2014/15 is connected with significant devaluation of the national currency resulted in a sharp rise in prices of imported produce. As a result, imported pears became less affordable for Ukrainian consumers, and the majority of them preferred less expensive apples.
