Onion prices down in Ukraine

Ukrainian farmers are forced to reduce their onion prices, according to Fruit-Inform.

As a result, onions have become averagely 30% less expensive in Ukraine since the beginning of this week. Now growers are ready to ship their onions at UAH 4.50-6.00/kg (EUR 0.15-0.20/kg), depending on quality, shipment volume and sales region. For comparison, onion prices were not lower than UAH 7/kg (EUR 0.23/kg).

Negative trend in pricing is connected with the abundant supply of onions, as early varieties have been joined by later ones in the Ukrainian market. In addition, nonstandard onions account for a large part of current sales, as the quality of produce has worsened due to unfavorable weather conditions.

However, it should also be noted that current onion prices are still about 50% higher year-on-year.
