Garlic price jumped up in Kyiv

The insufficient garlic supply and absence of Ukrainian produce resulted in the price increase for garlic on Kyiv FARMER market better known as Troyeschina. The garlic price has being kept on the level $2.5-2.6/kg recently in the conditions of the insufficient supply. All available garlic is imported mostly form China.

The garlic price has not changed recently on Lviv SHUVAR market, it is still about $1.3-1.5/kg.

According to the data of the official statistics, 146,000 tons of garlic were produced in Ukraine in 2005. The garlic production is rather even throughout Ukraine, still Donetsk and Odesa oblasts are the leaders. This year, according to the forecast of the Agricultural Marketing Project, the garlic acreage extension is expected to reach 5%.

The interest to garlic is rapidly growing due to the increased demand and a very few number of the professional producers. As a result, there is a lack of the wholesale marketable shipments.
