Ukraine doubles stonefruit imports year-on-year

According to Fruit-Inform, Ukraine's stonefruit imports have doubled in July 2014 compared with the same month of the previous year due to a decrease in the domestic production of those fruits in the country.

Ukraine's cumulative imports of stonefruits in June-July 2014 were a third higher year-on-year. Imports from the EU countries rose by 50%, and the EU accounted for about 90% of Ukraine's total stonefruit imports.

Fruit-Inform analysts belive that stonefruit imports stood a good chance to be even higher if not for extremely low demand for imported fruits due to the devaluation of the Ukrainian hryvnia and a decrease in Ukrainians' paying capacity.

Meanwhile, due to lower production, Ukraine's exports of stonefruits (mainly to Russia) went down in summer and took just a third of the export volumes in summer 2013.
