Sharp drop of Polish apple exports to non-EU destinations

Preliminary data released by Eurostat show that in the first month after the introduction of the Russian embargo Polish exports of apples to countries outside the EU have decreased by 31%. In the same period last year, Russia received 83% of Poland's apple exports to non-EU destination.

Most noteworthy in August this year is the significant increase in apple exports to Belarus and Kazakhstan. Together, these two countries accounted for nearly 90% of Polish exports to countries outside the EU-28. In the case of Belarus and Kazakhstan, export growth was almost identical and amounted to +293%, up to 2.6 and 1.6 thousand tonnes, respectively. There has also an increase in apple shipments to Ukraine and Serbia, although these volumes were much smaller.

Although it is still impossible to determine what the final results will be for Polish apple exporters in the 2014/2015 season, it is expected that the previously mentioned export markets may become increasingly important in the coming months. When it comes to markets such as North Africa, China or India, Eurostat data for August showed no exports of Polish origin.

We would remind you that more detailed information about the impact of Russia's ban on the Eastern European fruit and vegetable market will be presented at the 11th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014», which is going to be held on December 8-9 in Kiev. The conference will be followed by the 4th International Trade Forumwith about 30 Ukrainian retail chains and importers ready to conduct negotiations with fruit and vegetable suppliers on December 10.
