Russian apple growers unable to raise prices despite ban

Prices of local apples have been stable in Russia for the 5th week in a row despite the bans on imports from the EU, Moldova and Ukraine.

Under conditions of abundant supply of domestic produce as well as apples from Belarus, Serbia, Chile and Argentina, Russian growers have not revised their prices so far. As before, they offer their fruits at RUB 15-25/kg (USD 0.38-0.63/kg), depending on variety and quality.

We would remind you that apple prices were averagely 15% higher in Russia in the same period of the previous season. A year-on-year decrease in prices is connected with higher apple production in the Russian Federation in this season and availability of large volumes of European apples re-exported through Belarus.

More detailed information about the impact of Russia's bans on the Eastern European fruit and vegetable market will be presented at the 11th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014», which is going to be held on December 8-9 in Kiev. The conference will be followed by the 4th International Trade Forum with about 30 Ukrainian retail chains and importers ready to conduct negotiations with fruit and vegetable suppliers on December 10.
