Russia's ban on imports pulls fruit and vegetable prices down in Ukraine

Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index went down by 8.4% in the week from October 18th to 24th, after introduction of the the ban on imports of Ukrainian crops in Russia.

«A decrease in prices last week was too sharp for October and was provoked by Russia's ban, which had affected the sectors most dependent on exports to Russia: greenhouse cucumbers, greenhouse tomatoes and apples», says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «Greenhouse vegetables became 20.5% less expensive last week, and apple prices went down by 9.1%. Moreover, the market participants expect a further decrease in prices of those products if the ban is not lifted, which is unlikely to be registered in the nearest time».

A price recovery in the onion sector stopped last week, as onions also had been exported to Russia. A general price trend in the segment of traditional vegetables and potatoes was negative, and those products became averagely 3.1% less expensive.
