Russia: Rosselkhoznadzor toughens control over foodstuffs transit from Belarus due to alleged re-exports of European products

Russia's veterinary and phytosanitary watchdog (Rosselkhoznadzor) has toughened control over transit of foodstuffs from Belarus through Russia on November 24.

Having monitored the situation with alleged illegal shipments of European products banned in Russia through Belarus, Rosselkhoznadzor officers have revealed more than 11,000 tons of fruits and vegetables produced in the EU countries, shipped from Belarus to Kazakhstan and then «lost» on the territory of Russia.

According to Rosselkhoznadzor, those volumes account for more than 10% of the total ones shipped from Belarus. Rosselkhoznadzor has also previously informed that some market participants use illegal ways to deliver banned crop products to Russia.

Rosselkhoznadzor regrets to say that Belarusian and Kazakh authorities have taken no effective measures to prevent pseudo-transit of crop products, the statement says.

Taking into account phytosanitary risks, connected with imports of products of unidentified origin, and following food risks, Rosselkhoznadzor has decided to allow transportation of certain crop products to third countries, inclusive of Kazakhstan, only through checkpoints on the state borders of the Russian Federation.
