Ukraine: demand for frozen berries, vegetables down

According to Fruit-Inform, the demand for frozen fruits and vegetables has sharply gone down in Ukraine in this season.

Domestic manufacturers say of the demand for their products to have almost halved compared with the previous year due to an increase in their prices and a considerable decrease in Ukrainians' paying capacity.

The demand has fallen the most in the segment of frozen vegetables, according to manufacturers, and consumers now prefer less expensive fresh vegetables. Moreover, prices of frozen vegetables are averagely 50% higher year-on-year due to an increase in prices of imported raw produce connected with the devaluation of the Ukrainian hryvnia.

A fall in the demand for frozen berries is less significant, as consumer now have no alternative due to lack of fresh products in the market. To reduce their manufacturing costs, many manufacturers, which process imported berries, are ready to purchase less expensive low-quality raw produce.

The Ukrainian market participants also say of a significant decrease in exports of frozen fruits and vegetables. Frozen blueberries have previously been the main exported category in Ukraine, but a decrease in fresh blueberry outputs led to higher prices of end product, which negatively affected the demand in the export markets.

We would remind you that Ukrainian manufacturers of frozen vegetables and berries cover almost a half of their demand in raw produce by imports.

More detailed information about the Ukrainian market for frozen fruits and vegetables will be presented at the 11th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014», which is going to be held on December 8-9 in Kiev. The conference will be followed by the 4th International Trade Forum with about 30 Ukrainian retail chains and importers ready to conduct negotiations with fruit and vegetable suppliers on December 10.
