Russians face lower assortment and supply of imported fruits and vegetables

Russian fruit and vegetable importers had to revise their policy due to the devaluation of the Russian ruble. In view of instability in the foreign exchange market, suppliers have to daily revise their assortment and reduce purchase volumes from other countries.

According to Fruit-Inform, Russian importers' assortment of fruits and vegetables has gone down by about 20% over the past week. First of all, suppliers are ready to stop purchasing such specialty crops as cherry tomatoes, zucchini, radish and some brassica crops.

The situation with fruit imports is somewhat better. Citrus fruits, bananas, exotics and apples are still the major categories of Russia's fruit imports thanks to high demand for them before New Year holidays. Nevertheless, the fruit import sector has faced changes in the supply geography. For the present, Russian importers prefer relatively inexpensive fruits of Turkish origin, while a month before they often reported of shipments from Morocco.
