Sales of pickled vegetables, salads halve in Ukraine

Ukrainian processors say of a significant fall in the demand for pickled vegetables and salads in this season, according to Fruit-Inform.

Representatives of processing factories assess sales of those products to have halved year-on-year due to large supply of inexpensive fresh vegetables and Ukrainians' lower paying capacity.

For the present, sales are relatively active only in the segments of sauerkraut and Korean-style carrots. Thanks to low prices of raw produce, processors managed to maintain prices of those categories at the previous year's levels.

At the same time, prices of pickled salads made of imported raw produce (laminaria, for example) or frozen seasonal vegetables (aubergines, green beans) have grown by at least 50%, which has resulted in a fall of sales to critically low levels. Furthermore, processors' expectations of a traditional increase in sales in the mid-December have not come true so far. We would remind you that sales of pickled vegetables and salads usually peak in Ukraine during the New Year holidays.
