Ukraine: fresh produce price index down for 2nd week in a row

Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index went down by 1.9% in the week from March 14th to 20th, after a fall of 10% a week before.

«A fall in prices of greenhouse vegetables thanks to higher supply of domestic produce made the largest contribution to a decrease in the price index last week», says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «In addition, prices of white cabbage and onions went down due to problems with shipments to Crimea, and potatoes became less expensive due to an increase in their supply: farmers boosted sales in view of closer start of a new season».

At the same time, carrot prices significantly went up due to a seasonal decrease in supply. The fresh fruit price index also grew thanks to higher prices of apples and bananas. However, growth was partially compensated by a fall in lemon prices.

The market participants expected a further increase in the supply of greenhouse vegetables and arrival of first quantities of early white cabbage in the nearest time. Imported early white cabbage became less competitive in Ukraine thanks to the devaluation of the Ukrainian hryvnia, which would back prices of domestic early produce.
