Ukraine: fresh produce price index sharply down after Easter

Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index fell by 14% in the week from April 11th to 17th, after an increase of 16.5% a week before. The price index fell mainly thanks to a sharp decrease in prices of greenhouse vegetables, while traditional vegetables again became more expensive.

«The Ukrainian market for greenhouse vegetables (the cucumber segment especially) was negatively affected by three factors: a sharp fall in the internal market demand after holidays, a decrease in the demand for cucumbers in Russia and higher domestic supply there, and sharp growth in Ukrainian greenhouse farms' outputs thanks to more favorable weather conditions. Those factors have resulted in falls of more than 50% in cucumber prices and 30% in tomato ones», says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «At the same time, trends in the market for traditional vegetables were quite the opposite».

Traditional vegetables have become 37.3% more expensive over a week, and their prices have also grown by almost 50% over the past two weeks. Even table beet prices have gone up together with carrot ones: +40% week-on-week. White cabbage prices grew by 30%. At the same time, potato prices were stable as growers were actively selling their stocks.

Fruits became 3.7% less expensive due to a decrease in banana prices. Meanwhile, prices of other fruit categories were relatively stable.
