Ukraine: fresh produce price index down due to less expensive greenhouse vegetables

Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index has decreased by 6.9% in the week from May 16th to 22nd due to significantly less expensive greenhouse vegetables.

«Prices of greenhouse cucumbers have more than halved over a week, and, together with negative price trend in the segment of greenhouse tomatoes, have led to lower fresh produce price index in Ukraine», says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «At the same time, traditional vegetables have become 6.4% more expensive over a week, and fruit prices have grown by 6.1%».

White cabbages remained the most expensive category among traditional vegetables, and both early and late varieties have again become more expensive last week. Carrot prices also kept on growing and still were higher year-on-year. Potato prices remained at their extremely low levels and took only a fifth of carrot ones against a background of still high potato stocks in Ukraine.

Strawberry prices have been traditionally daily declining: from UAH 130/kg (EUR 5.70/kg) two weeks ago to lower than UAH 25/kg (EUR 1.10/kg) now. At the same time, lemons, apples and bananas became more expensive and led to higher fresh fruit price index.
