Blueberries considered as most promising berry crop in Ukraine

Blueberries will be the most promising berry crop in Ukraine, said Mrs. Liliana Dmitriyeva, Director at Brusvyana, during the press-conference on domestic berry sector development.

«Minimum prices of blueberries have stood at no lower than $3/kg in Europe over the past few years, while maximum ones sometimes reached $10/kg. Blueberries also remain the most expensive berry crop in Ukraine, and we see no ground for a decrease in their prices in the nearest few years», said she. «The Ukrainian blueberry market is still far from being saturated, and the demand can be fully satisfied only after at least eight-fold increase in areas. It is almost impossible in the nearest time as laying out new plantations is rather expensive».

According to Fruit-Inform, current areas under blueberries in Ukraine total 700-750 ha, and annual total production reaches 800-900 tons. Areas under blueberries have almost tripled over the past 5 years, while production has grown 5-5.5 times.
