Livestock numbers in Ukraine dropping

As of January 1, 2004 the number of cattle in all categories of Ukrainian farming businesses constituted 7.9 million heads, which is by 1.2 million heads less than as of January 1, 2003. The number of cows dropped 8.2 percent from year ago, to 4.33 million heads.

The number of hogs in all categories of farms dropped by 1.7 million heads from the beginning of 2003 - to 7.5 million heads. The number of poultry decreased 2.3 percent from last year - to 144.04 million heads (147.5 million heads as of Jan. 1, 2003).

The number of sheep and goats has been 1.9 million heads, which is 4.7 percent less than as of January 1 last year.
