Poland reduces potato exports in 2012

Poland's potato exports amounted to 44,700 tonnes in 2012, a decrease of 35% from a year earlier, when exports had reached 71,400 tonnes. However, it should be noted that the 2011 data include exports in the season 2010/11, which turned out to be one of the most successful seasons for the Polish potato exporters.

Poland's potato export values in 2012 stood at $5,2 mln.

A decrease in potato exports was connected with sharply lower shipments to Central and Eastern Europe.

Belarus imported just 500 tonnes of Polish potatoes in 2012, whereas imports in 2011 had amounted to 45,000 tonnes. Russia purchased 5,000 tonnes in 2012 against 10,600 tonnes in 2011. Ukraine imported 50 tonnes of potatoes from Poland last year, whereas a year earlier Polish exports had reached 1,500 tonnes.

Lower exports to Central and Eastern Europe were not compensated by an increase in shipments to the EU countries (Denmark, Bulgaria, Hungary, UK, Italy and Romania), which grew from 2,200 tonnes in 2011 to 17,400 tonnes in 2012.
