Ukraine: onion prices rapidly up thanks to active exports
Ukrainian farmers have been rapidly raising their prices of high-quality onions thanks to high demand for them in Belarus, according to Fruit-Inform.
As a result, prices have grown by 36% since the beginning of this week and now reach UAH 2.50/kg (EUR 0.09/kg) in the internal market and UAH 3.50/kg (EUR 0.12/kg) for export-quality onions. For comparison, Ukrainian exporters were ready to purchase onions at no higher than UAH 2.40/kg (EUR 0.08/kg) a week before.
Nevertheless, it should be noted that current prices are still 38% lower year-on-year, although growers plan to continue to raise them in the nearest time in view of shortage of supply of high-quality onions in Russia, which consumes the largest part of Ukrainian onion export volumes thanks to re-exports through Belarus.
