The farmers of Poltava oblast were persuaded to apply new technologies on the particular case

On the 23rd of August 2005 Poltava office of the Agricultural Marketing Project (AMP) conducted the seminar and Field day on the Modern Technologies in Vegetable Production in Omelnyk village, Kremenchug rayon, Poltava oblast. The main problem discussed during the seminar was the application of modern technologies in vegetable production. The special attention was paid to the application of drip irrigation systems. It is a sensitive issue; as Oleg Smolka, the Agronomist of Poltava AMP office, says, the local farmers are very conservative concerning the implementation of various innovations. It is true for vegetable production, as the majority of the agricultural producers in the region deal with vegetables only in the framework of grain and beets group. The seminar was focused, first of all, on farmers and agricultural producers, which made up their minds to produce vegetables professionally. On the example of Pustovit and sons farm, headed by Nikolay Pustovit, AMP demonstrated the way to manage the farm so that the top yield for the region could be harvested even in the unfavorable weather conditions. The participants of the seminar could see by their own eyes the results of the application of new technologies and the professional approach to vegetable production.

As this Field day was the last this season, Poltava AMP office summarized the level of clients' activeness, and defined the winner of the competition on best quality, highest price. This year the most successful farmer was Nikolay Pustovit, the master of the demosite. Nina Kurchenko, village Verbki, Semenovskiy rayon was praised as the most active AMP client. Some producers were awarded the honorary certificates and the right of priority to participate in the AMP study tours on the expense of the Project.
