Crimea, Ukraine: high demand for Polish apples

Crimean middlemen's demand for Polish apples has grown this week. The demand for Ukrainian produce is also relatively high, but imported apples are more competitive thanks to their higher quality.

Ukrainian growers are ready to ship apples of 6+ size at UAH 7.50-8.50/kg (EUR 0.40-0.45/kg), while Polish suppliers fix similar prices for produce of 7+ size.

Ukrainian importers now receive orders mainly for red varieties, such as Decosta, Jonagold, Champion, Gala, Florina. Among green varieties, Crimean wholesalers are interested in Golden Delicious and Mutsu.

Ukrainian farmers also say of higher competition with imports in the Crimean market with any attempts to raise prices being followed by a fall in middlemen's demand. In their turn, Crimean buyers connect the situation with the price stability in Russia, which consumes the largest part of their volumes of Polish and Ukrainian apples purchased in mainland Ukraine.
