Ukraine: hryvnia devaluation forces fruit and vegetable prices up

Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index went up by 2.8% in the week from February 14th to 20th due to sharp devaluation of the Ukrainian hryvnia.

«An increase in the price index was connected with growth of 9.1% in fruit prices», says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «Traditional vegetables also became 10.9% more expensive; however, their share in consumer basket was lower».

Prices of traditional vegetables went up thanks to an increase in the demand for them in the export market. The sharpest growth in prices was registered in the white cabbage segment: up by 28.6% week-on-week. Carrots became 17.4% more expensive. As a result, white cabbages became the most expensive category of traditional vegetables, while red beets remained the least expensive.

As regards the segment of greenhouse vegetables, a decrease in cucumber prices was fully compensated by more expensive tomatoes. Domestic produce also kept on ousting imported cucumbers from the Ukrainian market. Moreover, the market participants expected the cucumber exports to start in the nearest time.
