Ukraine becomes one of main re-export channels of Moldovan apples to Russia

According to the official data, Moldova has significantly expanded its presence in the Ukrainian apple market in the season 2014/15. Ukraine's imports of Moldovan apples have reached record high 6,500 tons despite no import volumes over the past 4 seasons and just 29 tons in the season 2010/11.

Such a sharp rise in imports is connected with mass re-exports of Moldovan apples to Russia. We would remind you that Russia introduced a ban on imports of Moldovan fruits and vegetables in summer 2014; therefore, Moldovan growers had to find new alternative channels for export to Russia, the country, which had previously been their largest export market. Russia's ban on imports of fruits and vegetables from Ukraine was introduced only in late October; therefore, Ukraine was the most attractive re-export channel for Moldovan apples in the period from August to October 2014.

Such conclusions are also confirmed by Ukrainian external trade statistics: 90% of Moldova's apple exports were shipped to Ukraine in August-October 2014.

At the same time, the market analysts estimate consumption of imported apples in Ukraine to take just a third of the previous season's volumes due to a sharp jump in their prices. Moreover, due to relatively high reference prices at Ukrainian customs, Moldovan apples were unable to compete even with Polish ones in Ukraine.

We would remind you that more detailed information about the Ukrainian apple market developments will be presented at the 5th International Conference «Apple Business of Ukraine-2015», which is going to take place on August 13-14, Kleopatra Hotel, Kamyanets-Podilskyi, Ukraine.
