Ukraine becomes 2nd biggest producer of onions in Europe

According to Fruit-Inform, in 2011, thanks to a sharp increase in production, Ukraine became the second biggest producer of onions in Europe being slightly behind only the Netherlands, where production grew too.

Furthermore, if 5-6 years ago Polish onion production was higher than Ukrainian one, then now Ukrainian farmers harvest twice as more onions as Polish do.

“Theoretically, Ukraine could export more than 200,000 tonnes of onions in this season”, Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform, says. “At the same time, exports are restrained by Ukrainian entrepreneurs' lack of experience in international fruit and vegetable trade and low onion prices in the EU and Russia. However, we have already started studying Ukrainian produce's export opportunities in the Middle East countries and will share the results with all participants of the 4th International Conference “Potatoes and Vegetables of Ukraine – 2012””.

We would remind you that the conference will take place at President Hotel, Kiev, Ukraine, February 16-17, 2012. The event is supported by Ukrainian Association of Potato Producers and Ukrainian Association of Wholesale Markets and will be attended by the biggest vegetable and potato producers, suppliers of seeds, machinery, equipment, the largest purchasers of produce and companies interested in investing in the Ukrainian vegetable and potato business.
