Export, processing and efficiency able to save Ukraine's vegetable farming from falling into a severe crisis
It is well known that Ukrainian vegetable growers and potato producers got into serious trouble in the current season having responded to the government's call to expand areas thoughtlessly. Unfortunately, Fruit-Inform's forecasts were fully corroborated: potato and vegetable prices do not cover even production costs in this season. Moreover, prices keep on decreasing.
A surplus volume of vegetables in the market forces Ukrainian entrepreneurs to seek for new sales channels for their excess produce, as it is most probable that the Ukrainian market will enter new season with high stocks of onions, potatoes and even carrots, white cabbages and red beets. And this means that this produce will be simply thrown out that will inflict producers' losses running into billions of hryvnias.
Specially for the 4th International Conference “Potatoes and Vegetables of Ukraine – 2012”, Fruit-Inform, having made contacts with importers from all over the world, carried out an analysis of Ukrainian vegetable export possibilities. In particular, thanks to our activity, we managed to attract attention to Ukraine's vegetable export potential in the Middle East and Middle Asia as well as to get Ukrainian importers involved in export promotion issues. The vegetable export issue will be covered by the conference speech of Mrs. Kristina Kapelnitskaya, one of the most well-know Ukrainian expert in fruit and vegetable trade, who is engaged in practical aspects of trade and logistics.
In addition, a surplus of vegetables led to a sharp growth of the interest to processing, particularly to production of pickles in Ukraine. The current situation in the Ukrainian market for pickled vegetables and its development prospects will be described in the conference speech of a representative of Olvita Company, one of the pioneers in this market.
The lower are vegetable prices, the more important are quality of produce and production efficiency. It is precisely this fact why the conference program includes a practical master-class of Mr. Vadim Dudka, Director of Agroanaliz and a leading Ukrainian specialist in vegetable growing technologies, who will give a speech on practical aspects of achieving higher efficiency and better quality of produce.
Will vegetable and potato prices be high again in Ukraine in the next year? It is the pre-planting period when this question is important for every company, however the answer is not so evident as it might seem. Thus we decided to fix an earlier date for our fundamental forecast (usually issued in May) and will be ready to present it during the conference to help Ukrainian producers plan their activities for new season. The forecast will be presented by Mrs. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform.
Success factors of investments in the fruit and vegetable sector with due regard for price fluctuations will be given high attention during the conference speech of Mr. Andriy Yarmak, FAO Investment Department Specialist.
The conference will be held in President Hotel, Kiev, Ukraine, February 16-17, 2012, and will be attended by more than 150 delegates from 10-12 countries of the world. Traditionally, producers of potatoes and vegetables (onions, white cabbages, red beets, carrots) will account for the majority of the conference participants.
