Ukrainian fresh produce price index still stable

Fruit-Inform's Ukrainian fresh produce price index has been stable for already two months. Last week it went up by 0.7%, after a decrease of 0.3% a week earlier. Thus, the price index has been stagnating for the eighth week in row with its fluctuations amounting to atypical 0-1.5% within a week in this period.

“The price stability in the market for traditional vegetables (onions, white cabbage, beetroots, carrots) and potatoes makes consumers happy, but is a disaster for farmers who have been operating at a loss for two years”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “The price fluctuations were observed mainly in the segment of greenhouse vegetables, which prices increased and then decreased approximately by 10-20% last week”.

The fruit market has been stable for the fourth week in a row. An increase in banana prices within the previous two weeks was the only price fluctuation in this market.

Ukrainian farmers and importers expect higher demand for fruits and vegetables this week in connection with closer Great Lent, the time when consumption of fruit and vegetable products traditionally grows. Nevertheless, according to Fruit-Inform estimates, the demand will grow just by 10-12% on normal levels, which may be insufficient to reverse the tendencies in the market.

We would remind you that more information about current developments and future prospects in the Ukrainian and Russian fruit and vegetable markets is available for subscribers of Fruit-Inform Weekly service package.
