Ukraine still net importer of tomatoes

The volume of tomato imports outweighed the exports in Ukraine by 60% in 2017, reports Fruit-Inform referring to the official customs data.

According to the official data, Ukraine imported 34,500 tons of tomatoes, while shipments to the external market reached only 21,000 tons.

Nevertheless, in terms of volume imports to the Ukrainian tomato market tumbled by 6% in 2017. The top supplier was Turkey accounting for 96% of total tomato imports to Ukraine.

It is also worth mentioning that despite the Russian import ban (until November 1, 2017) Turkey did not succeed in boosting its presence in the Ukrainian tomato market over the past year. For instance, in the last season Ukraine imported only 33,000 tons of the produce, which almost corresponded to 2016 results.
