Ukraine to regain status of net exporter of traditional vegetables

Ukraine stands a good chance to regain its status of a net exporter of traditional vegetables (onions, white cabbage, carrots, table beets) in this season, according to Fruit-Inform.

The devaluation of the Ukrainian hryvnia has both favored better competitiveness of Ukrainian produce in the Russian market and protected the Ukrainian market from imports from the EU, where farmers suffer from overproduction this year.

Ukraine became a net importer of traditional vegetables in the previous season due to a fall in domestic production. According to the official statistics, Ukraine's vegetable imports totaled 100,000 tons in July 2013 – June 2014, while exports stood at just 16,000 tons. Furthermore, the real imports were much larger than official data, as significant volumes of produce were smuggled from the EU and Russia to Ukraine. As a result, pricing in the Ukrainian market fully depended on imports in the second half of the season 2013/14.

More detailed information about the trends observed in the Eastern European market for potatoes and traditional vegetables (onions, white cabbage, carrots, table beets) will be presented at the 7th International Conference «Potatoes & Vegetables of Ukraine-2015» to be held on February 27, 2015, Kiev, Ukraine.
